Soverato chilli pepper

Soverato is a charming seaside resort overlooking the Ionian Sea, in the centre of the Gulf of Squillace. In the past, it was also known as a health resort and tourist resort (named by royal decree in 1926) thanks to its protected climate and virtually uncontaminated environment where stars, seahorses and sea flowers still live and reproduce.

Thanks to seaside tourism, in the past the inhabitants of the small town did not cultivate their land directly, but were joined by the peasants who had settled in the area around Soverato to sell their products: among these were the famous 'pipari', who arrived with the prized chilli pepper gathered in bunches together with their partners nicknamed 'le pacchiane'.

While the local chilli pepper has always been used in abundance in the area, as a fundamental ingredient of typical Calabrian cuisine, the fame of Soverato chilli pepper came later in Italy, when the well-known Zelig comedian Franco included a reference to this chilli pepper in his gags, which, as can be seen from his social profiles, he uses personally in his cooking.

The characteristics of Soverato chilli peppers

The typical Soverato chilli pepper plant has exceptional aromatic properties with a medium pungency. We would also like to remind you that the consumption of chilli pepper (obviously without exaggerating) is considered by many to be a panacea for health: it protects against infections thanks to the presence of vitamin C and is rich in antioxidants as it belongs to the category of cardio protectors.

At Bottega di Calabria, chilli peppers are at home: you can find them crushed, in cream, or sliced and pickled. To receive support during the purchase phase, contact us at +39 0984 1758060.
